MAKING FRIENDS WITH YOURSELF

Can you spend time with yourself? Do you always need to have someone’s company in order to have a good time? Are you constantly finding things to do to be engaged? Is that your way of being happy or keeping yourself entertained?

Many of us have been through that stage, while some are in the process of overcoming while others in fear of making that choice. How do you make friends with yourself? We are often so critical of ourselves that we become our own enemies instead of being a friend. Meditation is a way of ending that cycle and making friends with ourselves. We will start realising that we are actually not as bad as we think or were told by others. If we are constantly looking on the outside for something better than us, that search will go on and on indefinitely. Rather if we start observing ourselves through meditation, we start seeing the actual state of our mind. We see our rugged and raw being. It is similar to building a long-term friendship with someone. Acknowledging the problems and flaws and coming to terms with them. How can you expect someone to understand you if you don’t understand yourself well enough? You cultivate and understand the positive and negative traits of yourself through meditation by observing.

People travel places to go into nature, climbing mountains, going on a safari ride, sea/sky diving and many other adventures. It is simpler and immediate to accept the natural beauty of ourselves. It is getting into this organic natural situation of what we are. We have to walk on our own feet and this is the first step in developing awareness. Start with simple techniques of sitting, walking and breathing. Our present situation is our stepping stone. We simplify it by starting with having no expectations about what you will gain by meditating. You just begin.

You may start observing some things of yourself that you wouldn’t like but yet we can’t reject ourselves before we know who or what we are. As you practise sitting with yourself over a period of time, you will start understanding things about yourself and others which will give you clarity. As mentioned in my previous post, everyone one has a different experience and yours will only be known to you and no other. This journey of self discovery is a beautiful experience and you will realise the practise speaks for itself.

All we need is discipline and consistency.
